In 7 days, Amazon rewrites your product titles. Not asks — rewrites. On July 27, 2026, every product title in every category except media must be 75 characters or fewer, including spaces. If yours isn't, Amazon's AI will shorten it for you. And it won't always make the same call you would about your brand or your best keywords.

This is not a drill. Most categories previously allowed up to 200 characters, and a lot of listings have grown to fill that space over the years. Cutting from 200 to 75 means deciding which words survive and which get exiled to a new field called Item Highlights. The sellers who handle this well are the ones who rewrite their own titles on their own terms — before Amazon does it automatically.

1. What exactly changes on July 27

Two things, and they work together:

  • Title limit: 75 characters maximum, including spaces. Every category except media (books, music, video). Applies to Seller Central and Vendor Central, North America, EU, Singapore, and South Africa.
  • Item Highlights: a new field with 125 searchable characters for details that no longer fit in the title. This shows up next to your title in search results and on the product detail page. It's searchable — so the keywords you remove from the title don't disappear from indexing, they just move.

Your listings stay active if you do nothing. But after July 27, Amazon will gradually start updating non-compliant titles using AI-generated suggestions, starting with Best Sellers. Brand owners get a 14-day review window through the Review Listings Changes tool in Seller Central — but that's a safety net, not a plan.

2. Why Amazon is doing this

Mobile. On a phone screen, a 200-character title gets truncated, and the words past the cut-off do nothing for the shopper trying to decide between similar products. A title built to fill 200 characters reads as clutter on mobile, and clutter makes it harder to understand what the product is at a glance.

A 75-character limit forces every title to lead with what matters. Amazon's framing is customer-first, so titles written for customers rather than keyword volume are the ones that will hold up. This is also a signal that keyword-stuffed titles are being deprioritized — not by penalty, but by truncation and by the AI rewrites that strip them down.

3. The risk of letting Amazon's AI rewrite your titles

When you let the AI make the call, you're trusting an automated system to decide which of your words are the most important. It won't always agree with you. Common failure modes:

  • Brand name truncated: AI may shorten "GoatToys Super Soft Plush" to "GoatToys Plush" — losing the "super soft" differentiator
  • Key spec moved to highlights: The one attribute customers filter on (size, color, quantity) might get moved instead of kept in the title
  • Keyword gaps: Your highest-converting search term might not make the AI's cut, reducing organic discoverability

You can edit titles after an automatic update, but reviewing and fixing AI changes across a catalog is more work than rewriting them yourself upfront.

4. The 7-day audit plan

Here's a practical approach to get your catalog compliant before the deadline:

DayActionPriority
1Export your full catalog. Filter for titles over 75 characters. Sort by revenue descending.Find the damage
2Rewrite your top 10 best-selling listings by hand. Use the title formula below.Highest revenue at risk
3Rewrite your top 10-30 best-sellers. Handle variation families together.Volume batch
4Move secondary keywords and specs into Item Highlights (125 chars) for each rewritten listing.Catch the overflow
5Verify with =LEN() in Excel that every new title is ≤75 chars. Check Item Highlights ≤125.Compliance check
6Submit updates in Seller Central → Manage All Inventory → Edit → View EnhancementsPush live
7Confirm Brand Registry enrollment for the 14-day review window on any remaining auto-updatesSafety net

5. The 75-character title formula

Seventy-five characters goes quickly. Give every word a job:

[Brand] + [Core Product Type] + [1-2 Key Differentiators]

Lead with the terms a shopper would actually type or scan for. Drop filler: repeated words, redundant synonyms, long strings of use cases.

Before (206 chars): GoatToys Super Soft Plush Stuffed Animal Goat Toy 12 Inch, Cuddly Farm Animal Plushie for Kids Toddlers Boys Girls Babies, Machine Washable Stuffed Goat Gift for Birthday Christmas Baby Shower Nursery Decor

After (73 chars): GoatToys Plush Stuffed Goat, 12-Inch Soft Cuddly Farm Animal Toy for Kids

Item Highlights (123 chars): Machine-washable plush; gift for birthdays, Christmas & baby showers; soft nursery decor for toddlers, babies, boys & girls

Notice what stayed and what moved. The title leads with brand, says plainly what the product is, and keeps the two details a shopper cares about most: size and audience. Gift occasions, washability, and nursery angle moved to Item Highlights — still searchable, still helping comparison.

6. How Item Highlights works (and what to put there)

Item Highlights is the home for everything true and useful about your product that no longer earns a spot in 75 characters. Good candidates:

  • Materials and dimensions
  • Compatibility and included quantities
  • Care instructions
  • Specific use cases that help comparison
  • Secondary keywords: the terms you pull out of the title still get indexed here

The field is searchable and shows next to your title in search results and on the detail page. Write it to help a shopper compare — clear, specific, comparison-friendly detail does more for conversion than a dense keyword list.

7. What this means for advertising

Title changes affect your ads. Sponsored Products ads display the product title, so a shortened title means fewer keywords visible in the ad copy. If your top-converting search term was in position 6 of a 200-character title and gets moved to Item Highlights, the ad still indexes for that term — but the shopper sees a cleaner, shorter title.

Check your top campaigns: are the keywords that drive your best-converting Sponsored Products still in the 75-character title? If not, make sure they're in Item Highlights so they stay indexed. Then monitor ACoS and CTR for the first 14 days after the change — a title rewrite can shift which keywords your ads match on.

8. The profit angle most sellers miss

A title rewrite isn't just a compliance exercise — it's a conversion optimization opportunity. The old 200-character titles were often keyword-stuffed and hard to read. A clean 75-character title that leads with brand + product type + key differentiator converts better on mobile, where 60-70% of Amazon shopping happens.

Track conversion rate before and after the rewrite. If your top sellers see a conversion lift from cleaner titles, the compliance deadline just became a free CRO pass. If conversion drops, your title formula is wrong — test variations and let data decide.

9. How FiveX helps

FiveX can audit your full Amazon catalog for title compliance — flagging every SKU over 75 characters, ranking by revenue at risk, and connecting the title keywords to your actual ad performance data so you know which terms to protect in the title versus move to Item Highlights. Instead of guessing which words matter, you rewrite from data.

Comment utiliser cet insight
